Shalakya Tantra-KNM

Shalakya Tantra - Karna, Nasa, Mukha (KNM) is a specialized area within Shalakya Tantra in Ayurveda that deals with diseases and treatments related to the ears (Karna), nose (Nasa), and oral cavity and throat (Mukha). It offers both preventive and curative approaches to ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) disorders, with treatments based on balancing the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha).

Karna (Ear) Disorders and Treatments

1. Karna Nada (Tinnitus)

  • Symptoms: Ringing or buzzing sounds in the ears.
  • Treatment: Nasya (Nasal Therapy): Administration of medicated oils to balance Vata dosha.
  • Herbs: Ashwagandha, Bala.
  • Ear drops with medicated oils like Bilva Taila.

2. Karna Shoola (Ear Pain)

  • Symptoms: Sharp or dull ear pain due to infections, injuries, or dosha imbalance.
  • Treatment: Warm herbal ear drops like Bilva Taila or Dashamoola Taila.
  • Treatment: Steam inhalation with medicated decoctions for congestion relief.

  • Tailored treatments involving herbs, external applications, and detoxification therapies like Netra Tarpana.

Nasa (Nose) Disorders and Treatments

1. Pratishyaya (Common Cold/Allergic Rhinitis)

  • Treatment: Nasya: Medicated oil like Anu Taila to reduce congestion.
  • Steam inhalation with Vata and Kapha pacifying herbs.

2. Nasavarodha (Nasal Obstruction)

  • Symptoms: Blocked nasal passages due to polyps, sinusitis, or dosha imbalances.
  • Treatment: Dhuma (Herbal Smoke Therapy): Inhalation of medicated smoke.
  • Nasal drops with anti-inflammatory herbal oils.

Mukha (Oral Cavity and Throat) Disorders and Treatments

1. Mukha Dourgandhya (Halitosis/Bad Breath)

  • Symptoms: Persistent foul breath.
  • Treatment: Chewing fresh herbs like cardamom or clove.
  • Treatment: Herbal mouth rinses with Triphala or neem decoction.

2. Dantaharsha (Tooth Sensitivity)

  • Symptoms: Pain or discomfort in teeth when consuming hot, cold, or sweet foods.
  • Treatment: Herbal tooth powders with clove and licorice.
